Florida Legislature Rolls Back Local Property Taxes
The Florida State Legislature approved a two-part package that will cut property taxes by as much as $31,600,000,000 over five years (or $6,320,000,000 per year). It is expected that $15,600,000,000 will come from cuts in local government tax revenues beginning October 1, 2007 fiscal year, and the second part of this roll back was approved by 60% of voters on January 29, 2008 - a constitutional amendment dramatically expanding the homestead exemption - which will cut an additional $16,000,000,000 in property taxes during the following four years from local government and school budgets.
Because of the impact this legislation would have on the Cities in Florida many cities are commissioning organizational, financial, and process assessments. Municipal Solutions™ L.L.C has been retained to conduct these studies in many communities in Florida.
